Part of my study has included highlighting scriptural evidence of six different definitions of the word “gather.” Here, teal indicates the definition from the Cambridge English Dictionary to “obtain things, especially from different places.” “You do you” The teal indicates a specific spiritual application to the doctrine that I have assigned. The gold indicates reference to the Abrahamic Covenant. The silver color indicates the scattering of Israel. For example, above is a verse from the Book of Mormon (2 Nephi 10:8) I’ve been studying about the gathering of Israel. I have also started underlining specific, nuanced points of doctrine as I study them in depth. It is a testimony to me that God truly can speak to us through the voices of his ancient prophets. I assigned colors for each topic as needed and have loved adding that to my study, especially in sections I’ve already color coded. As mentioned above, right now I have a laser focus on studying the gathering of Israel and the Abrahamic Covenant. Some verses have four or five topics or points of doctrine and it strengthens my testimony of the Book of Mormon and the Bible. One other reason I love this color coding method is becuase it shows me just how rich each verse of scripture is. As my study as expanded, I’ve created additional keys for specific doctrine as needed. I wrote my key in the front cover of my scriptures. Especially because I have chosen so many of them. So, having a key is invaluable for my aforementioned ADD brain to remember what each color means. Some days it’s simply reading the verses on my phone. I can tell you from personal experience that I do not consistently study in this manor.

Often times, as I was studying I’d find that the passage or verse I was reading didn’t fit into any specific category I had already created. I started with a set of 24 colored pencils, (less than $3 at Target) assigned a color for each doctrine or topic I wanted to identify and it grew from there. I first learned about the idea for the small colored boxes from a book I’ll tell you more about below. This wasn’t my original idea, though I have adapted it to meet my own study needs.

I digress.Īs you can see from the photo above, this is a simple, clutter-free way to color code your scriptures. So we can clearly never fly Southwest again. This set is falling apart but I refuse to ever part with it. I purchased them in 2008 after Southwest Airlines lost my luggage and my other very loved scriptures. It’s multiple boxes and oh, so easy.įirst of all, let’s hear it for these mission scriptures of mine. Oh, more than one point of doctrine per verse? Not to worry. Each color indicates a different meaning or doctrine. This method is as easy as drawing a small colored box around the verse number of the passage you’re studying. I’m not trying to be one of those food bloggers who tell you their ancestral connection to the obscure herb they use in their recipe for potato salad. Ok, before I tell you my why, let’s get to the meat. That’s great! Study so you can hear the word of the Lord in your life. This means my scripture study will look different from my husband’s, and yours and my friends and family. Nephi, an ancient American prophet from the Book of Mormon taught us the same thing. Therefore, he will speak to us in the language we can understand.

I know that our Heavenly Father wants us to study his word. I encourage you to take my approach with an open heart and a grain of salt. With that being said, the technique I use works for me and aligns with the way the spirit speaks to me. I have found a wealth of knowledge and revelations in the verses and passages I study when I use this approach, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to take their gospel study routine to the next level. This technique is a simple one I keep coming back to whenever I want to recommit to more meaningful scripture study. My current flavor of the week is color coding my scriptures. In fact, rarely do I engage my time in something that I don’t throw body, mind and soul into. My entire life is basically one revolving door of passion projects.
